Okaty, let's face it, there are some really cool new trends out ther -- and there are some that are just plain bad ideas.
This is one of the worst trends I've heard of, yet frighteningly, it is being done.
(NOW I’M SKIPPING IT MYSELF, BUT IF YOU GO FOR IT, PLEASE SEND ME A PICTURE)
It's called EYEBALL TATTOOING!
Yup, people really are getting the whites of their eyes tattooed, in more or less the same way that you would get any other part of your body inked.
They prop open the eye, and inject the pigment (exactly the same type used in a regular tattoo), into the eyeball, just under the top layer of the eye, using a syringe.
Not much of a surprise, Ophthalmologists say eyeball tattoos for the purpose of body modification are dangerous and could lead to infection, hemorrhages or even blindness.
It really does sound dangerous (and frankly, quite revolting), bu the people doing the proceedure say it's safe, and that the eye is very resilient, because it's actually designed to handle contaminants being there.
I’ve done a little research and there ARE documents on eyeball tattooing dating back to the late 19th century -- when it was first offered as a corrective surgery for people with poor sight, and then as a cosmetic practice to change the colour of the eye.
In fact, it's listed as one of the oldest forms of tattooing, and freaky eyeball tattoo'ers say there are even medical reports on it from that era that are all positive, basically saying it’s safer than regular tattooing.
Um, I think I'll just stick to a dorky flower on my ankle, thanks!!
